Bad breath in a dog or cat is not a personality trait. It is often food stuck on teeth, inflamed gums, or both. This article is about what you can do in the kitchen and when to stop guessing. At home: brush, but only with pet toothpaste
Daily brushing is the one home habit that still matters when marketing for chews gets loud. Use a pet toothbrush or a clean finger brush and pet toothpaste. Human toothpaste has fluoride and foaming agents that dogs and cats should not swallow. Start with a smear on a lip, then a few teeth, then a full pass along the gumline at a 45-degree angle. Reward. A 20-second fight that makes the pet hide is worse than a 10-second success four nights a week.
Cats often prefer a smaller brush and a quieter room. Dogs that guard their mouths need slower work, not a stronger grip. If you cannot get near the head without a freeze or a snap, stop and book an exam — that is information, not a failure.
Chews, water additives, and diets
Dental diets and chews with a Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) seal can slow tartar on some pets. They do not clean infection under the gumline. A water additive is not a substitute for looking in the mouth. Bones, antlers, and rock-hard nylon can fracture teeth; if you use anything hard, watch for broken crowns and pieces swallowed whole.
Home care fails when there is already pain. A pet that drops kibble, chews on one side, paws at the face, drools pink, or has a swelling under the eye is past the “try a new chew” stage.
At the vet: exam first, surgery only if recommended
On a wellness checkup the veterinarian looks at teeth and gums while your pet is awake. That is an examination, not a cleaning. Dental surgery — when it is appropriate — is a scheduled procedure on our surgery list. We do not book “a cleaning” the way a groomer books a bath. The mouth is examined first. Cleaning or surgery, if recommended, is medical care.
This hospital does not advertise digital dental X-rays, laser dentistry, COHAT branding, or anesthesia-free “cleanings.” Those claims belong to other businesses. We will not invent equipment here.
When the mouth cannot wait for a routine slot
